HERE 2019 was an eventful year for ATL. Our eleventh "season" (if you know how we operate, you know what a joke that it) churned up all kinds of weird and wonderful work.
The last official Audacity Solo Salon at the Margo Jones Theatre in Dallas' Fair Park started off the year with works-in-progress by Erin Singleton, Justin Lemieux and Abel Flores. 2019 also saw the fifth and final Dallas Solo Fest, with 8 great solo performers presenting their shows at the Theatre Too! space downstairs at Dallas' historic Theatre Three. During the summer, AT Artistic Director Brad McEntire presented the festival premiere of his newest one-man show The Beast of Hyperborea, a homage to the Victorian adventure fiction of the late 1800s. It ran several weeks at the Festival of Independent Theatres (FIT) at Dallas' Bath House Cultural Center. After performing it at the Dallas Solo Fest, McEntire also took his solo show Cyrano A-Go-Go to two fringe festivals at the end of the summer... the Elgin Fringe Festival in Illinois and the Theatre Crude Fringe in Oklahoma City. It won a award in Elgin and proved to be an audience fave at both festivals. Finally, we've got you covered with a new collection of ATL plays published by Dribble Funk Books. These are several works that have developed in the past at Audacity, including audience darling from the 2015 FIT, Dinosaur and Robot Stop a Train. Your support in body, spirit, word, coin, and deed has been wonderful for the past eleven years and fortifies us to march forth into next year. We have some weird and uh-maz-ing projects in the works for 2020. If you’re moved to give fiscally on top of all you’ve given us and those in need this past year, you can do so by visiting here to DONATE. See you in 2020! Cyrano A-Go-Go is an exploration of one restless theatre artist's fascination with the 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. A chance encounter with the script at a suburban library at the age of fifteen leads McEntire into a wonderful, and sometimes elusive, calling. Mixing the personal, historical and literary into a journey through Rostand's play McEntire puts a funny, warm, insightful spin on the usual coming-of-age one-man show.

HERE "McEntire knows how to blend the touching with the fanciful, the astonishing with gravitas. While he sometimes seems to be winking at us, at other times his credulity gives this vivid monologue substance and humanity."
~ Christopher Soden, SharpCritic.com "All the characters are portrayed with dazzling nuance... Bravo to McEntire for bringing not only the thrills to his tall tale, but heart as well. This one’s a 'can’t miss' in my book." ~ Jill Sweeney, TheaterJones.com The aim of the Audacity Solo Salon is to support and nurture both established and emerging solo performers in the north Texas area. It is also a way to extend the mission of the Dallas Solo Fest beyond just the annual festival itself. This quarterly series will be a way for solo artists to present, rehearse, experiement with and develop their work in front of supportive audiences. Come on out and see a new one-person show in progress... The Excerpts: Girl Dad - Written and Perfomed by Justin Lemieux A rollercoaster journey through relationships, Girl Dad is a heart-warming exploration of one man's understanding of masculinity. When Justin becomes father to only daughters his expectations are upended and he must confront his assumptions about what girls experience in the world. Diagnose Me - Written and Performed by Erin Singleton Erin can spot misalignments. In this rousing show formatted like a TED talk-turned-confessional, Erin explores what happens when a person confronts her crippling need to fix the people in her life, but can't. AFJ - Written by Abel Flores, Jr. & Tyler Cochran, Performed by Abel Flores, Jr.
AFJ wants to be president and everything is riding on this speech. Will he be able to get your vote or crack under the pressure of his bold promises? This one-man show harkens back to the great political speeches of our past world leaders while still reminding us of the haunting qualities of the current political climate. Co-written by Tyler Cochran, Abel Flores Jr. brings his alter ego, AFJ, to the spotlight with a performance that will allow audiences to witness the absurdity of certain candidates that we know all too well. |
